Thanks for stopping by! I am Chu Xin (Cloris) Cheng, a senior at California Institute of Technology majoring in CS. I am fortunate to have worked with Prof. Yisong Yue and Prof. Adam Wierman from Caltech, Prof. Ellen Zhong from Princeton, and Prof. Yanan Sui from Tsinghua University.

My past research centers around dealing with uncertainties in optimization and decision-making processes. From designing efficient sampling algorithms for high dimensional problems using Bayesian optimization and MCMC to leveraging human feedback using bandit algorithms for exoskeleton gaits, I am intrigued by problems that interleave theoretical challenges and practical application. Recently, I am also exploring applications of Bayesian optimization in experimental design problems, and I am excited to see how general machine learning tools can be used to accelerate scientific discovery.

At Caltech, I am surrounded by so many brilliant minds, and I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and collaborate with Raul M. Astudillo, Chris Yeh, Yiheng Lin and many more amazing people on various projects.

You are welcomed to take a look at my CV here.

Jul 15, 2024 Arrived at Princeton University and started working with Prof. Ellen Zhong on a project about chemical structure elucidation from Nuclear Magnestic Resonance (NMR) spectrum. I am also excited to learn more about structural biology and various problems relating to cryo-electron microscopy in the Zhong Lab!
Jun 15, 2024 Received Henry Ford II Scholar Award from the Division of Engineering and Applied Science and Jack E. Froehlich Memorial Award from the Undergraduate Academic Standards and Honors Committee at Caltech. I am grateful for the recognition and support from the division and the committee.
Jan 03, 2024 I am a TA for Data Mining and Machine Learning (CS 155) taught by Prof. Yisong Yue. Come visit me in office hours!
Sep 27, 2023 TAing for Introduction to Probability Models (ACM 116) taught by Prof. Kostia Zuev. Probably the OHs will be useful for probability questions!
Jul 21, 2023 Visited Dr. Thomas Desautels and his team at Lawrence Livermore National Lab! It’s quite amazing how many different subroutines are involved in a protein design pipeline!
